It is strange and maybe even unjust how many different health problems that to us would seem human our dogs can suffer from.
These are various eye diseases such as cataracts and glaucomas, heart and muscular-skeletal disorders, problems with blood and endocrine system (including diabetes mellitus), respiratory disorders and epilepsy – and the list is far from complete. What is more, in pursuit of profit, unprincipled backyard breeders may not be giving proper attention to congenital disorders in dog breeds being crossed, thus producing weaker litter. Yet again, crossing pure dog breeds gradually leads to weakening of genes and hereditary diseases develop... Some dog breeds are more amenable to certain diseases than other dog breeds...
Naturally, good health is essential for happy living of any dog breed, so owners should take care watching for earliest signs of sickness in their pets. It is not only the matter of relieving the dog from pain, but also diagnosing illnesses at an early stage that would ensure more efficient treatment and save you a good lot of money for more pleasant activities with the pet.
The first sign that something's wrong is, of course, change in behaviour that is not caused by any obvious external factors like arrival of guests, etc. In particular, this may show in depression, excessive anxiety, unusual sleepiness or aggression. The dog may bite or lick the area that is disturbing him, whine or even cry (with tears) or tremble. However, some dog breeds have higher sensitivity threshold than other dog breeds and can bear pain with no explicit demonstration of it.
Among other obvious symptoms for every dog breed are the following: shaking or twitching ears, red or swollen eyes, runny or crusty, hot nose, coughing, vomiting, irregular breath, lack of appetite and weight loss, tumours, evidence of parasites, etc.
Should you notice one of the above signs, contact your veterinarian immediately, as it may be your favourite pet's life that is set on stake!
