Reasons To Get a Chihuahua

The Chihuahua is a very small dog that on average only weighs between two and six pounds.  In addition to its small size, the Chihuahua is known for his loyalty, passion, intelligence, perceptiveness, and being protective of his house. Adult dogs are also known for hiding their true personality for a few weeks.  They do this to see what kind of personality the owner has, and find out who will get to be the boss in the house. A Chihuahua is a very good pet to have for a couple of reasons.

Reason One  - Size

Due to the Chihuahua's size, he makes a great indoor guard dog.  He will guard your house, but not take up as much room in your house.  This is also good for people who rent, many landlords will favor a small dog over a larger dog.   With a Chihuahua you get all the advantages of having a small dog, along with the advantage of a guard dog.

Reason Two - Feeding

Another reason people choose this breed of dog is the amount they eat, because the chihuahua is small and it does not eat much food.  Usually two to three small feedings of about two to three ounces will be sufficient to keep your dog eating healthy on a daily basis.  In addition to the quality dog food a handful of biscuits throughout the day is a great additional treat for a chihuahua.

Reason Three - Exercise

Exercising your dog is also very easy.  Most Chihuahua's only need the amount of exercise they get running around the house playing.  This makes a great pet for people who are busy and are unable to walk out their dog everyday.  If you enjoy going for long walks you will be surprised at how well your Chihuahua does at keeping up with you.

Reason Four - Grooming

Keeping a chihuahua groomed is also easy.  All you need to do is use a soft brush, and then use your hand or a wet towel to make his coat shine.  You will need to make sure you keep his nails trimmed and his ears clean also, but this is fairly easy to do with such a small dog.

Most people are also surprised to find out how tough their dog is.  Although because they are so small they do tend to dislike the cold, so a coat is welcomed on cold days.  This is also why they like to curl up in a little ball in a warm place.

There is one thing you need to be careful of with a Chihuahua, they have a soft spot on the top of the head.  So if you have small children in the home it is important to always supervise their interactions with your dog. A small child may pick up a Chihuahua and think it is a toy, but then drop the dog suddenly if it begins to wiggle around. The soft spot may never get hard, so trauma to the head is very dangerous, and should be avoided.
